Birdie King had an identical twin, Bessie (Ensminger). They were born 8 September 1898, in Dallas, living at that time at 117 North Clinton Street in Dallas. Their father was John Henry King, a carpenter, aged 37. Their Mother was Virgie Harris, housewife, age 28. Birdie enjoyed both elementary and high school, excelling not so much academically, but with friendships. Her teachers were quite complimentary in their remarks written for her remembrance books. One high school teacher wrote of "...the true ties of frienship that cannot be broken." A second high school teacher wrote Birdie: "One is a friend for a reason; one is a friend for a rhyme; And one is a friend for a season, but I trust we will be friends for all time." Birdie completed her elementary grades in Dallas on 30 January 1914 and started high school soon thereafter.

All of her life, Birdie was an avid reader of fiction. She continuously kept the librarians busy hunting books for her whether she lived in Eastland, Texas, Shreveport, Louisiana, Houston or Dallas. Her twin, Bessie, during her twenties moved to Chicago to marry Fred Ensminger, a firemen on a train. Bessie and Birdie seldom saw each other, except for occasional vacations. However, they were in constant touch via telephone. Birdie was quite close to her younger sister, Elizabeth Teasley. They held long daily telephone conversations, even when they lived far apart.

Birdie was not well during the last few years of her life. She spent considerable time in hospitals and died 23 December 1978 of carduac arrest, She was buried in Grove Hill Memorial Paark Cementary in Dallas. On the afternoon of her death, she was visited by her son Charles Victor Manes. She was laughing at a movie she had just seen with Clint Eastwood. In the movie, there was an orangutan named "Manes." Birdie thought this was hilarious.
