Claude Manes was the second son of Edmund Victor and Melinda Manes. As a very young youth, he visited the Cherokee lands in Oklahoma frequently. He insisted there was Cherokee and Iroquois blood in the Manes family lines. Claude recounts that his grandparents (Polk Davis and Sarah Louise Gipson)lived in Indian Territory near Marietta. Every Spring, until Claude was about 7 years of age, Margaret Melinda would take her children to visit her parents in Indian Territory. These visits continued until Oklahoma became a state. Then most of the Davis family moved to Guymon, Oklahoma, or what was called the Cherokee Strip. There many became elgible for 640 acres of grazing land and 168 acres of farming land. However, several DNA tests by Chas. V. Manes, Sr. show no evidence of any Indian blood. For several years Claude was with the Dallas Police Department. Claude married into the Wagner family in Dallas and later moved to Los Angeles working for the University of California. The family acquired several acres of land near Joshua Tree which they donated to a church organization. In 1985, Claude died of complications from a fall and broken hip.
