Jarvis Elmer Dale was born 22 March 1890 in Seguin, Texas. Elmer was the only son of Jarvis Valentine Dale and his wife Amanda Zulicia Collins. Elmer had six sisters. Elmer and his sisters all grew up on land that his father had inherited known as "hardscramble." Elmer and his sisters attended the Dale School at upper Mill Crseek until 1905. The family moved to Kingsbury a few miles from Mills Creek and lived there for two years (1906-07). In 1908, Elmer with his family moved to Blanco, Texas. Elmer Dale grsaduated from Blanco High School in June of 1913. In World War I, Elmer served in the army mostly in Texas in the postal services. Elmer was a member of the Masons for fifty years. Elmer married Lydia Jane Applewhite in March of 1917. There were three children from this marriage: Hazel Jane Dale (born 1918), Zula Jean (born 1920), and Dorothy Clay (born 1922). All were born in Blanco. Elmer and his wife owned and published the Blanco Newspaper for many years. They were strong supporters of Lyndon Johnson, both as a Congressman and later as President. Elmer's primary vocation was rural mail carrier in Blanco County. However, he and his wife continually added to their income with other activities: they owned a dry cleaning establishment on the Blanco County square; and, they operated the Blanco County Newspaper for several decades. inc Mrs. Dale was Editor of the newspaper. She also was a grade school teacher. They maintained boarders at their home in Blanco, mostly single school teachers. Elmer Dale had an active profession in real estate, selling ranches througout the Hill Country. Together,Elmer and his wife started an antique business in the late 1940's. They traveled Europe and the Middle East for antiques and eventually built one of the most notable antique shops in Texas. Especially, they were able to acquire fine icons for sale from Jerusalem (that had been imported from Russia). During their entire time in Blanco, Elmer and his wife were active members of the Blanco Methodist Church. Jane, his wife, taught for more than 20 years an adult Sunday School class. Elmer was a steward and board member of ths Methodist Church. Elmer died 1 June 1971 in the Johnson City, Texas, hospital of ccardiac arrhythmia. Former Presidnt Lyndon Johnson attended his funeral services in Blanco.
