Jarvis Dale was born 21 October 1861 in a cabin on property mext to the present day Garner State Park in Uvalde County, Texas. He and Amanda Zula Collins were married 9 May 1889 at Mill Creek near Seguin, Texas. Jarvis and Zula lived on this land inherited from his parents (Valentine Dale and Jane Johnson). Upon this land at Mill Creek was a one room rock cabin named "Hardscramble." As their family grew, they added additional rooms of wood to the rock cabin. They bought from Seguin second hand furniture that had been imported from Germany. This furniture included an organ that their children were taught to play by a teacher from Seguin. Jarvis often would ride a horse into Seguin in the afternoon to visit friends and not return until after dark. Zula was afraid to be left alone after dark, so she would gather her children on their front porch and wait there until Jarvis returned. Their older children attended school (Dale School)at upper Mill Creek until 1905. Then they moved a few miles to Kingsbury, Texas, amd lived there for two years (1906-07). In 1908, they moved to Blanco, Texas, so that the girls would have a better opportunity to meet future husbands. Jarvis made their living as a farmer at Mill Creek. After moving to Blanco, he hauled freight by wagon and later by truck. He also was a substitute mail carrier. The family kept hogs, chickens, milk cows, and horses on their acreage in Blanco. Their property extended to the Blanco River, and their house had many rooms connected by a hall. They had a large barn, a cistern, a windmill and a well. The water from the well was so cold that it hurt your teeth while drinking it. Seven children grew up and were married in their Blanco home. Jarvis died 2 September 1946 in Blanco. Zula died 14 November 1960 in San Antonio. Zula and Jarvis are buried in Blanco.
