| In his own handwriting, Larkin Harry Manes stated that there exists no public or church record of his birth. The only evidence of his birth was an entry made by his Mother in a family Bible in Springfield, Missouri, on 19th of January 1867. The Bible recorded that Larkin was born 24 March 1843. This Bible has not been located, and the name of Larkin's Mother is not known. Other records indicate that Larkin's birth was in Cleveland, Bradley County, Tennessee. Larkin lived in TN until 1858 when he moved to Searcy County, Arkansas. In 1861, he was conscripted into the 2nd Regiment of Arkansas Confederate Army. However, he wrote that, "I was small and they let me go back home." Larkin was 5 feet 7 inches tall, blue eyes, brown hair, and fair complexion. On 20th of July 1863, Larkin enrolled in 2nd Regiment of Arkansas Cavalry, Union Forces. He was discharged from U. S. service on 20 August 1865. Larkin has mentioned that he comes from a large family, about 12, of half brothers and sisters. When he returned from Union duty, he sat down at the family dinner table and no one recognized him. He had grown a beard and changed in appearance. He was discharged in Memphis and immediately went to Springfield, Missouri, where presumably his Mother lived. From Springfield, he moved to Hindsville, Arkansas, and worked as a farmer. Larkin married Henrietta Josephine Chenowth 9 July 1868 in Hindsville, Arkansas. They had four children: Edmund Victor Manes born April 1870, Margaret Manes born 1872, Annie Manes born 1874, and Willie Manes born 1888. In 1878, with his wife and family and Mother-in-law Agnes Picket Chenowth moved to Tarrant County, Texas, and on to Dallas in 1884. Larkin's Mother-in-law never knew that he served in the Union forces. So, every time the mail man was scheduled to deliver Larkin's pension of $12 per month, Larkin would make certain that he was at the mail box to receive personally his pension. Larkin died 1 November 1930 in Dallas, Texas.
